Flat-size pieces must be flexible. Boxes—with or without hinges, gaps, or breaks that allow the piece to bend—are not flats.

For more information, refer to the USPS® Domestic Mail Manual.

1. Place the piece with the length parallel to the edge of a flat surface and extend the piece halfway off the surface.

2. Press down on the piece at a point 1 inch from the outer edge, in the center of the piece's length, exerting steady pressure.

3. The piece is not flexible if it cannot bend at least 1 inch vertically without being damaged.

If you are having trouble printing from within pbSmartPostage™, here are some troubleshooting items to check:

  • Mac OS: The Brother stamp roll printer is not supported on the Mac at this time. Datamax or Zebra thermal printers are not supported. You can print from a standard laser printer.
  • Java: Verify that you have Java version 6.0 or higher installed on your computer. pbSmartPostage™ requires Java. If your PC does not have Java 6.0 or higher currently installed, you will be prompted to download and install it the first time you run pbSmartPostage™.
    • When you log into pbSmartPostage™ for the first time and navigate to either the Print Stamps page or Ship Packages page, the Security Information dialog box is displayed with a Java-related prompt: Do You Want to Run the Application?
      • Select the Always trust content from this publisher checkbox if you do not want to be prompted with this dialog box every time you want to print a label or a stamp.
      • Click the Run button. (If you do not click Run, the Java applet will not be able to get the list of printers from your PC to display in the Label or Stamp print dialogs.)
      • NOTE: If you click the Cancel button at the prompt, an error will be displayed in your Java logs and you will NOT be able to print either samples or real labels/stamps.
  • Internet Explorer: If you are using Internet Explorer as your Web browser, verify that it is at Internet Explorer version 7 or higher. pbSmartPostage™ does not work with Internet Explorer version 6 or below.
  • Firefox: If you are using Firefox as your Web browser, verify that it is at Firefox version 3.0 or higher.
  • Can you print elsewhere? Verify that you can print from another source (such as printing a Word document).
  • Operating System: Verify that you are using a Windows Operating System (not using a Mac).
  • Print Media: Verify that you are using pbSmartPostage™ printable postage sheets (cannot use plain paper).
  • Stamp Sheet Serial Number: If you are printing stamps, verify that you are entering the serial number that is located at the bottom of the stamp sheet.
  • Printer Type: Verify the type of printer being used (must be laser, inkjet, or Pitney Bowes provided thermal label printer). Read this special note if it is a Datamax Thermal Label Printer.
  • Test Prints: When test printing, make sure you first use the test sheets that were included in your pbSmartPostage™ welcome kit.
